What is the Difference Between Platinum and White Gold?
Platinum is 30 times more rare than gold and approximately 95% pure. It is more durable than other precious metals and is a true white metal that is recommended for holding precious stones, a strength not equaled in gold. Platinum also has the prestige of being associated with the most celebrated jewelry in the world. It is 60 percent heavier than karat gold.
White gold is alloyed with nickel and zine to bleach out the yellow color. Eighteen-karat gold is 75% pure gold and 14-karat is 58.50% gold. White gold does cost less, about 30% less than platinum, which is the main reason many people choose it. However, it has to be plated with rhodium (a precious metal in the platinum family) to make it shiny and plating tends to wear off over time. However, it can be re-plated as needed.
